There are about 500 Anganwadi day care centers in Chandigarh run by the government, but most of them lack basic facilities, especially learning materials and games for early childhood development. Even mats (or daris) on which these children sit, eat, play, and study are found to be too thin and torn in most of the surveyed centers, causing injury to some children and creating an unhygienic environment for all kids. Most kids in most surveyed centers were also found to be malnourished and weak. The condition of these centers is below average and is in need of a serious intervention.
The approximate cost of revamping one aaganwadi is INR 15000.
The collections shall go into revamping the basics of the identified aangwadias and providing them with high quality 'daris' and education material i.e. books and toys to make learning fun for these children who come from impoverished homes where parents are engaged in a struggle for survival. Along with this, they shall be provided with cupboards and digital weighing scales.
More the funds raised, more aanganwadis would we be able to cover. The children in these Anganwadis would benefit through proper ECE (early childhood education) material which would help in foundational understanding. Moreover, the digital weighing scales will help in keeping a proper weight recording for children and ensuring their mothers are kept aware of a nutritious diet. Children deserve a good day-care environment and this model would provide equity to these underprivileged children.
