This solution is aimed at providing free of cost eye care to the students of rural areas, in the form of reading glasses to help them go to school, study, and carry out everyday chores.
A survey of 3000 students in 5 schools showcased that none of the students in the schools were wearing spectacles and the team realized that the students have never had their eyes medical checkup done. Global Shapers Chandigarh have tied up with different eye-hospitals for detecting weak eyesight in children from low-income backgrounds, hindering their ability to read and write. This social intervention of providing free health care, eye checkup in schools has helped in reducing student dropout rates because they are now able to keep pace with the academics.
In India, 41% of children (under 18 years) are estimated to need visual correction but either don’t get the treatment or can’t afford the same. Mostly undetected weak eyesight is mistaken as the child’s inability to read and write. Here is where Global Shapers are intervening and correcting this. This model is a collaborative effort where an eye checkup partner, a spectacle wholesale vendor, companies and volunteers have come together to make an impact.
Global Shapers estimate that they have checked 3000 students with 500 detected with weak vision till date.
