This patent-pending voice prosthesis device is a speech device made of platinum cured silicon - medical grade, that helps throat cancer patients, whose voice box is surgically removed, speak again.
Innaumation Medical Devices’ AUM voice prosthesis comprises of a one way valve, made of medical grade platinum cured silicone that is used to help laryngectomized patients to speak. Most patients of throat cancer who undergo laryngectomy are unable to speak due to removal of voice box. They can eat through their mouths but they cannot speak as there is no voice box. During laryngectomy an opening between the food pipe and the windpipe can be created, called the tracheo-esophageal puncture. The prosthesis is fitted into this hole and helps air from the lung to be directed to the food pipe, enabling the patient to speak again.
India sees about 10 lakh new cases of cancer each year. Of these 25, 000 cancers roughly affect the throat. Conservative estimates suggest around 5000 patients in India each year potentially stand to lose their voice box to throat cancer. AUM’s Voice Prosthesis gives voice to these patients with a novel design that functions optimally. Their solution is cost-effective (<1$)compared to western alternatives (300-400$) that makes it accessible to all.
The Voice Box is made of medical grade silicon and has minimal environmental damage potential.
IMD has helped more than 30 throat-cancer patients speak.
The device costs $1 making it accessible to all, as compared to other western makes.
