This model is a step towards expanding distribution of socially, economically and environmentally-friendly bio-toilets to low-income people across India.
Banka Bioloo is a women-led business organization engaged in dealing with the problem of open defecation that takes place every day. They manufacture, promote and suppy ELOO – The BioDigester toilets, that use latest technology to help in degrading human waste in the most efficient manner. This sanitation system can be readily installed at places where conventional toilets facility cannot be made available. Banka Bioloo’s model addresses the need for a cheaper and easy-to-operate alternative to the traditional waste disposal system. Additionally, their services include renting of mobile Biotoilets, consulting for development of large bio tanks, and wastewater and recycling solutions.
The Bio Digester Tank System (BDTS) is the first of its kind Digester Tank system which is a consortium of anaerobic bacteria that has been formulated and adopted to work at temp as low as 5 degree C. The optimum temp is maintained by microbial heat, insulation of the reactor and solar heating at places wherever required. The system disposes human waste in 100% eco-friendly manner. It saves energy, conserves water, and produces biogas only in minor quantities.
Bioloos treat human waste at the source with no contamination of the environment or groundwater, no energy requirements and no heavy infrastructure, leaving pathogen-free water that can be used for gardening. In large bio-tanks, methane can also be collected and used for fuel.
Banka BioLoo works directly with the families at the base of the economic pyramid (BoP) . Women and girls are the biggest beneficiaries of Banka BioLoo’s technology: Bioloos provide them a sense of security and dignity, support menstrual hygiene and contribute to girls’ school attendance.
All staff involved with Banka BioLoo, in manufacturing are given pensions, health benefits and access to the banking system. Each installation includes the training of local masons and labourers. In addition, every service contract provides employment for 10-12 local youth from BoP families – 50% of Banka BioLoo team members are from low-income households.
