This solution provides training and recruiting for the unemployed youth and women in slums to sell environmentally friendly and socially transformative products among the low-income families.

LivelyHoods’ model has three key components. The first being “Recruitment and Training” - they partner with local, community-based organizations to organize a free, two-week sales and marketing training, upon successful completion of which an opportunity to work as a full-time sales agent is provided. The second is “Products Consignment” - after a daily meeting and goal-setting the sales agents check out their consignment of $75 worth of products. The third is “Sales” - distributing sustainable products through its door-to-door sales force, pop-up marketing events, and bulk orders to savings cooperatives and other organizations.

The innovation

THE INNOVATION

Millions of families in Kenyan slums remain unemployed and unable to earn a regular and decent living. LivelyHoods’ multi-faceted approach to economic empowerment, climate change mitigation, and clean-energy access in urban slum communities, provides an efficient solution to this problem. Their model ensures their agents do not go into debt by using a micro-consignment model to check products in and out each morning, and their market penetration strategy is proactive in order to reach the target market of slum-dwellers and small businesses.

Livelyhoods provides free training, often the first opportunity for learning and development beyond school for many young people and women in the slums, which can then turn into a full-time job, turning individuals who are seen as social burdens, into agents of change.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

ECONOMIC IMPACT

Livelyhoods sales-agents earn an income and enjoy an individual savings program. Through the products they sell in their communities, low-income households save up to $115 a year on reduced fuel expenditure.
