This solution works on the same principle, as that of a biosand filter, offering increased filtration rate and better portability than the conventional model. Besides its appearance, this steel filter adds to the strength, reliability, durability, and portability, making it a reliable source for clean drinking-water.

JalKalp, developed by engineers at Sehgal Foundation, performs better than its concrete counterparts and has a wider opportunity for application and adoption in different geographical conditions. JalKalp is 4.5 kg in weight, offering increased filtration rate and better portability (than concrete models). Water quality tests demonstrate JalKalp’s effectiveness against E coli, total coliforms, turbidity, and iron contamination. This filter integrates the germicidal properties of copper with the conventional filtration. The presence of Coliform and E.Coli (98.5- 100%) in the water can be removed from water by adding copper foil in the drainage zone of the filter.

The innovation

THE INNOVATION

Worldwide, millions of children die due to water-borne diseases every year. JalKalp provides a solution to this problem by being self-sustainable and not requiring any operational, replacement or maintenance cost after the installation. To remove coliform, small pieces of thin copper sheet having total surface area of 6 square centimeters have been inserted in the drainage layer. All these aspects overcome the shortcomings of conventional biosand filter, making Sehgal’s innovation a unique one.

Environmental Impact

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

JalKalp’s operation does not require electricity. In comparison with other modern day filters that largely operate on electricity and require regular replacement of parts, JalKalp is environment friendly with minimal carbon footprint.

SOCIAL IMPACT

SOCIAL IMPACT

JalKalp removes pathogens, arsenic, iron and suspended particles from water. It removes the biological contaminants present in the water and there by reduces the incidence of water-borne diseases.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

ECONOMIC IMPACT

JalKalp requires small capital investment from the end user. The filtering materials (sand and gravel) present in the filter are easily and locally available. There is no recurring cost of operation or expensive parts to replace.
