In India, 41% of children (under 18 years) are estimated to need visual correction but they either don’t get access to screening or the visual aid remains unaffordable. Usually in such areas, undetected poor vision is mistaken for a child’s inability to read and write. It is then very difficult for them to even see the blackboard in class which in turn leads to lower grades. This problem is more prevalent in schools where children from lower income group come to study. The pilots conducted at Government Schools in Rajjipur (Panchkula), Sector-19 (Panchkula), Baddi and G.M.S. Raipur Kalan have covered over 2000 students and this success has encouraged us to stride forward.
We have collaborated with hospital partners who provide testing equipment and machines and a wholesale vendor to provide us with spectacles (frames with lenses) at reduced costs. The format is to conduct eye check-ups for an entire group of students. Those diagnosed with vision anomalies are provided optimal eyeglasses without charging them a single rupee.
This project is expected to increase the children's average performance in school equivalent to half a year of extra schooling. So far, across five government schools, children were handed their spectacles by the donors themselves who were able to see a direct impact of the intervention and found themselves connected to the cause. These children were unable to read the blackboards earlier but were able to do so perfectly afterward and had a distinct glee on their faces.
